before I head out on my trip I want to post this. It was suppose to be apart of a group of panels that encompassed the steps to creating an original species that was going to be a collaboration but it sorta fell apart. Anyways, this was my panel, which I still feel like it has some good points on its own (though I would have much preferred it to be with all the other panels) and it feels pretty relevant with a few species mimics popping up that past couple days.
I cannot stress enough the fact that there are SO MANY real world animals that are weird and cool and full of neat traits that can be used as inspiration for an original species. This is my advice on anatomy and body structure to anyone who is thinking about making a creature or develop an original species. Also, actually look at real world creatures, I looked at various photos for all my example animals, and they all look distinct even though they are all in the same style and color, if your trying to create something and it keeps looking like a dog even though you want to draw an anteater mixed with a rabbit creature then actually look at photos of anteaters and rabbits for inspiration.
I hope this helps.
image, art and example original species are mine, don't be a thief, my art is not free use nor to be used for reference, that is what photos and stock images are for.
This is a gorgeous piece of art as well as an extremely useful one <3

This is some great help! I had been working on my own O.S. and this is SO helpful!
This tutorial is really helpful, thank you! Also, what program did you use for this?
duuude i gonna go design some gun dog type creature, the one you made is so cute!
that wasn't what the tutorial guide was meant for, I already made a gundog, the point was to make something that has not been made yet.
This is so helpful, thank you!
The Gundog... just wow.
Now all I need is some sort of skill at drawing and then I'll be good to go!
Thank you both so much, these two tutorials helped me so much with creating my own original species. I'm still nervous about how I went with them, I haven't been given much feed back, so I don't know if they're that good or not, but these really helped me with designing them. I just wanted to thank you both for making these, you lovely people! Thank you so much! ;A;
This be useful, I like this :3

this is so helpfull!
I absolutely adore this,
thank you so much for making it!
I'm really sorry but the color used for this is REALLY hard to look at and read. ;w; It gives me a headache.
It sucks cause I really want to read this. /weeps/ Well anyways, it looks lovely at a glance, and I hope you don't mind me letting you know.
Save the image and change it to black and white in a photo editor
Awahh life got in the way ugh, it was a good endeavor though. tbh with those couple accidents that happened recently, although the peeps were really nice and understanding, it got me to think something should really be said soon.
maybe it was out of our hands a little bit though, it seems like we all had our method of creating species that didn't fit together seamlessly, like trying to fit together pieces from similar but different puzzles.
I could post that panel I made, I'm not sure it'd stand well on it's own though uhghhh, if I do maybe I'll link it to your panel idk
