Yahluu Sketches

Description

I mainly did these yesterday and finished them today, they are an older concept inspired by mixing two creatures from some dreams I had together. When I tried to draw them separately they didn't turn out right, but mixing them together actually hit pretty spot on for both of them. Im pretty happy that I was finally able to get them on paper correctly after so long (the original sketches of them were from 3 years ago)

Yahluu are an omnivorous creature who spend half their lives in the ocean and in rarer cases in freshwater. They eat kelp, seagrass, various sea critters including but not limited to crabs, sea urchins, shrimp, jellyfish, in freshwater cases they eat freshwater plants, crayfish, clams, snails, fish. Land related things that they eat are as follows, birds, bird eggs, fruit, mice and other small creatures, carrion, washed up dead things, and a variety of stolen bait from fisherman. Yahluu are about the size of a lion but do not usually prey on things that are larger than a medium sized dog. They can run at speeds of 40 mph and possibly higher. They are smart and curious creatures, playful but also very lazy and spend empty time sleeping in the sun. Fat is mostly stored in their tail. Their tails and back fins move in a wave like pattern, along with body motion and occasional foot paddling, to propel them through water in a similar way that a seal would move. Their feet are heavily webbed, but usually tuck up under their body when swimming and not being used to stabilize the body. Small ears pin back to keep water out, and they possess a second clear eyelid for seeing under water. On land their tail plates and back fins will open and flatten out when running, to give the smallest bit of lift to the body so that they are able to move easier, this is only done when running at top speeds because it does not help them otherwise. Their tail and body fins can also be held open when sun basking to gain energy and vitamins. Their tusks or fangs are used to intimidate other yahluu. They are generally solitary creatures but can be found in small groups or pairs. In these groups there is a hierarchy or pecking order that generally works itself out, usually the yahluu that is strongest/biggest is at the top. Gender does not influence size or color. Fur is very light and feathery, growling longer near the back legs and base of tail, an growing forward on their necks. Yahluu thrive in warmer climates and tend to avoid the cold. Cold water dwelling Yahluu are rare and tend to have a very different body shape, much thicker stockier bodies with very dark colors and thicker fur with a waterproof undercoat.

art and yahluus are mine, don't be a thief. My art is NOT free sue.
Yahluu are a closed species, do not create your own.
